Birthday Present and Some New "Art"

Another dance team member has a birthday this weekend and her favorite color is blue.  She came up to me after the last birthday and asked me if I would make her a doll sleeping bag set too (melt my heart).  So sweet and innocent at almost 8.  She is also getting her first American Girl Doll too.

My Mom acquired both of my Grandmas' sewing things when they moved to assisted living and a nursing home.  I went through and gathered up all the interesting notions and wooden spools.  They now have a home in shadow boxes in my sewing room.  I couldn't be happier with how they turned out.  The metallic looking package in the lower right corner of the large frame is a set of needles that came with tuna fish...really needles with tuna?

Baby Doll Beds

As I mentioned in an earlier post, my husband and I tag teamed and made doll bunk beds for our girls for Christmas.  He made and stained the beds and I made the bedding for each of the beds. 

USPS dropped the ball on the fabric for our oldest's bedding so she received a quilt that didn't have the binding sewn down. 

I used 1/2 inch foam for the mattresses and made simple pillowcase type "sheets" for the beds.  I had grand ideas of making actual sheets with elastic but with the thin foam mattresses it was an epic failure (on the evening of December 23rd). 

The girls loved their beds and immediately brought their babies down stairs to begin playing with them.

The first set of bunks went to our youngest, complete with a trundle.  She has Bitty Twins and Bitty Baby so they all needed a spot to sleep.  She is obsessed with pink and orange so I scoured Etsy and found a quilt kit with Kate Spain's Honey Honey fabric and ordered it for her bedding.  I also ordered some extra pink and orange flowers to back the quilts.  The bedding also happens to match the quilt that I made her for her 3rd birthday.

 

This set of bunks is for our oldest.  I am very thankful that I keep a shoe box of pre-made binding and happened to have a "spool" of Me and My Sister Designs scrappy binding.  The quilts are made with a charm pack from the new Bandana line that is being released and the sheets/backing are made with a very pretty print from LOL.  I love that all their fabrics play so well together.  She does have pillows for her dolls as well, but I am not sure where they landed in the chaos after Christmas.

Doll Sleeping Bag

My daughter is really close with her dance team and they like to have sleepovers (as a team). They all also love their American Girl Dolls.  Since there are several birthday party sleepovers coming up, I decided to make sleeping bags for each birthday girl using her favorite color. 

I will write up a tutorial for this one day, super easy...a charm pack, scrap batting and 3/4 yard of lining/binding fabric.

My daughter lays the charm squares out, picking some for a pillow too :)

Sleeping bag #2

For my littlest...she wouldn't sleep last night until her baby had her sleeping bag :)

American Girl Sleeping Bag

My daughters are fabric and American Girl obsessed.  They both indicated that their dolls needed a place to sleep on weekends while we are at our cottage.  They also both fell in love with Posy by Aneela Hoey.  Each girl laid out her own charm pack an I stitched them up.  I finished K's sleeping bag today.  I'm waiting on some backing (or lining) fabric to come in the mail for N's sleeping bag. I horribly miscalculated.  I used the leftover charms to make a pillow for the sleeping bag.

Doll Quilt for a Soon-to-be Big Sister

My little sister from the sorority in college is having a baby boy in a few months.  His quilt is almost finished...just need to hand sew the binding on and wait for him to arrive so I can make a tag with his birth stats.  Every Big Sister needs to be remembered when a new baby comes along, so I made a quick and easy doll quilt using Twirl by Me and My Sister Designs.  I love, love, love the backing fabric!

Finishing up those WIPs!!

I had some leftover fabric from this quilt and like any good quilter, I saved the scraps with every intention of making a doll quilt to go with the big girl quilt.  Life happened and that pile of 4 inch squares sat on my sewing table for the last 8 months along with the pink receiving blanket that I used for the backing. 

 

 

I ended up trimming the squares down to 3.5 inches by 4 inches to allow for one extra row and quilted with some "straight" lines 0.25 inches from each seam.  It looks beautiful. 

 

 

Of course, I didn't have fabric in my stash that was just the right color of pink for the binding and after the photos were taken, I headed to the fabric store and found the perfect shade of solid pink.  The doll quilt is in the dryer right now and I hope to get it in the mail to K tomorrow. 

Since there was some of the pink receiving blanket left over after I quilted it, I trimmed up the fabric with my pinking shears and made a little wipe clutch (stash busting!) and filled it with baby wipes.   I was able to take some photos of the binding...I love it!
