My Quilt is Finished

I finished 3 of 4 quilts in time for Christmas.  Since the last one was for me my deadline of Christmas was not firm.  I finished up my quilt Sunday afternoon on the drive back from my parent's house.  Now all of us have the same quilt. 

 

We all have grey ribbons on our quilts in support of my Dad and his battle with Glioblastoma.  I am happy to say that he is responding well to his chemo and had another clear scan a few weeks ago!!

Christmas Quilting

I finished the last quilt in the nick of time for Christmas, sewing the last bit of binding to the quilt around 9:30 on Christmas Eve...talk about cutting it close!  Below is a photo of my Dad with the quilt.  To say he loved it was an understatement.

 

 

There is a grey ribbon appliqued to the corner of each of the quilts that I made for my family.  We are all in this battle called brain cancer together.  For those that don't know, my Dad was diagnosed with Glioblastoma in March 2013...to say this year has been rough is an understatement.  Our world as we know it was forever changed with the diagnosis.  My life is lived in 8 week increments, from one brain scan to the next.  I love my Dad so much and it makes my heart hurt so much that he (and the rest of us) have to go through this, but we are in this together; hence the matching quilts with the ribbons.  

Below is a photo of my Mom and Dad, my brother, my sister and I.  I have started my version of the quilt but didn't get it finished in time for Christmas.  I am hoping to finish it on New Years Day while my hubby watches football and my girls are with my parents.  My sister was very excited to "make the blog."

This is my Dad and my youngest N.  They are buddies...always have been and always will be.

Absent blogger but for good reasons

I have been a busy, busy bee the last few weeks and since I have no idea who in my family reads my blog, I haven't been able to blog about anything.

All I have to say is that I am so so happy to have pulled it off this year.  I ended up super sick right before thanksgiving and it lingered and lingered...turned into an ear infection, sinus infection, a bought of the stomach bug and deviated septum surgery and I am just starting to feel a little better.  

I just finished sewing the binding on my last quilty Christmas gift (more about the quilts later).  Here is a sneak peak...

Another quilt top finished

I finished up another flimsy this morning.  I am making 4 quilts for my side of the family that are all nearly identical.  I have added grey ribbons to the bottom of the quilt for the battle that we are fighting with my Dad and brain cancer.  I am hoping to get this one basted and quilted tonight.

Twins are Complete

I finished sewing the binding on to this quilt today and just threw it into the washer to get it all crinkly and cozy before I wrap it up.  The quilt was made with scraps from this quilt with the pinwheels being leftover/orphan blocks from the quilt.  I am excited to get this washed and wrapped up for Christmas!  Hopefully the recipients will love their twins.

Christmas Gift Finished

I pieced the back to this quilt a couple of weeks ago and quilted it in a loopy pattern, a first for me. All I have to say is I am glad the back is busy because it hides some density issues. Oh well. It is hand bound and will be wrapped up tonight. I love the scrappy binding.

It's Twins

Quilts that is...I finished up the twin to this quilt this evening.  I laid the blocks out on my bed and after hemming and hawing over block placement, I couldn't move them without sewing them together. 

 

My quilt holder was a little too short :)

 

I received my backing fabric in the mail a week or so ago...now to baste and quilt.  My scrappy binding is all made up and ready to roll.  I made strips of leftover blocks for the backs of both quilts.  I still have some squares leftover...I may make some pillows.  I am going to make a simple 25 patch block baby quilt with the leftover jellyroll strips.  It seems like it would be a bright and fun baby girl quilt to have around just in case.

Christmas present

I am making 4 of this quilt...one for my parents, my brother's family, sister's family and my family.  I have to appliqué a gray ribbon to this one but didn't have the right thread color.

We are all getting gray quilts because gray is the awareness color for brain cancer...to remind us that we are all in this together, even if we are spread apart.

1930s

I had a pretty big stack of scraps from this quilt taking up space sitting in my fabric closet.  The fabrics are not my normal color pallet so there were no other projects that I could thrown them in to.  I saw this pattern and knew what I was going to do with those scraps.  After cutting them into squares, I realized that I didn't have much in the green or purple/pink colors and headed off to my local quilt store and picked up three half yards.  I also ordered a 1930s Bella jelly roll and some white fabric to make the four patches.  Rather than making one large quilt, I am making two lap sized quilts as gifts for Christmas this year...one down, one to go.  There is some cute fabric that is coming out in August that I am going to use for the backing along with some orphaned blocks from the original quilt.
