Scrappy Pips

I finished a Sherbet Pips quilt this week and once the binding is attached I will post.  In the meantime, here is a scrappy baby quilt using the trimmings from my backing and some white on white dots I had on hand. Sometimes a simple patchwork is the best.  I have pieced some leftover batting together as well for this quilt.

I was able to find some yardage on Etsy and ordered some pink and white dots from this line for the backing. I also have a stripe of four patches for the backing.   I have the perfect pale pink thread for the quilting. Happy Friday!

And I am so sorry for the crumby photos.  Weather in the Northeast has been gloomy, cloudy and rainy all week.

A Quilt for a Friend

This quilt finally made it to its new owner.  I received a text that her husband was beyond excited about an SU quilt for their new baby boy (early 2015 arrival).  Here are some finished photos.

Another Amelia Baby Quilt

My boss and his wife just had a baby girl who has some potential heart defects (which will hopefully resolve on their own).  I had scraps of Amelia fabric from another quilt and whipped this one up.  I am pretty sure I have enough scraps for at least 3 more Amelia baby quilts.  I originally bought a kit and there was so much left over so I ordered the blue paisley for the stripes and the blue flowers for the backing.  I have added pieces of lavender Amelia that was scraps from another Amelia quilt.  I love, love, love this line...I even have the entire thing in 0.5 yards in my stash for a project for my girls.

The pattern is an altered version of the Me and My Sister Designs Easy as 10 pattern.  I messed up and forgot the top and bottom strips of white.  The batting is from my ever shrinking stash of scraps :)

In other news my old sewing machine went to sewing machine heaven.  I took it in for annual service and because I was having some issues with it when I was FMQing.  It turns out a little teeny tiny piece of needle broke and severely damaged the shaft.  It was going to be a minimum of $500 to get it fixed.  Instead of fixing it, I traded it in and got a new one.  I am in love with my new Janome Memory Craft 7700.  It is faster, has a bigger throat space and quilts amazingly well!

Baby Quilt

Last year I made a large blue, orange and white chevron quilt for a charity auction and had a bunch of half square triangle blocks leftover.  There were not enough to make the quilt any bigger and there weren't enough to make a smaller chevron quilt.  The baby quilt below came from those leftovers.  I ended up needing to add 2 white half square blocks to finish the quilt out and I have to say I kinda love it.

It is quilted with a simple meandering pattern with block color appropriate thread...I didn't want the quilting to take away from the quilt.

The little "pull throughs" of blue will disappear when the quilt is washed.  Even the backing is leftover from the auction quilt.  I did purchase the orange fabric for the binding and will use up the extras binding with another donate quilt.  Even the batting was pieced together...yeah for destashing!!

This quilt is going to a dear friend who is pregnant with her first baby, a little boy.  Syracuse University brought us together as friends through sorority volunteering and her hubby is a huge Syracuse fan.  Lots of meaning with those colors.  Now to find the perfect book to go with the quilt before her shower :)

My Godmother is going to be a Grandmother

My Godmother is my Mom's best friend and while not a "blood" aunt she is my aunt through and through...my fairy godmother :)  Her stepson and his wife are having a baby in October and my Mom asked me to make a quilt for my Aunt to keep at her house...something to snuggle the baby up in when they visit.

I have had this quilt kit of Punctuation by American Jane forever and in the spirit of cleaning house and using up what I have I picked this quilt...it is actually perfect for my Aunt and her house.

 

My now 4 year old was a willing quilt holder.  She loves the fabric store as much as I do :) How is my munchkin 4?!?!  Her birth marks my quilting "anniversary" too...I had made 1 quilt before she was born and while I was preggers with her and during my maternity leave I made 2 queen size quilts.  She would fall asleep in her bouncy seat to the hum of my sewing machine.  I was bit (hard) by the quilting bug right before her arrival.

 

Instead of putting birth stats in the bottom corner I added this quote from a picture frame my Mom saw at a store.

A Finished Baby Quilt

I bought a bunch of solids a few years ago for a solids challenge. I was able to participate due to some other commitments/conflicts, so the fabric sat in my stash. I saw a great churn dash quilt pattern in Camille Roskelley's new(ish) book Simply Retro and loved it. I decided to use up some of my solids for a quick and simple baby quilt. I backed it in minky, a first for me. I'm not 100% happy with how the quilting turned out. I didn't use batting because the baby is coming in April and lives down south...not exactly ideal for a baby quilt backed in minky with batting, so I didn't use batting and the thread pulled some of the minky through the quilt top. There was no fixing, changing, altering no matter how hard I tried. It isn't really noticeable on the black part of the quilt, but it is noticeable in the pink and in some areas more than others. My husband thinks it looks fine and that we should give it to his friends for their baby...what do you all think?

 

Sorry for the indoor photos, it is way too cold in the Northeast to be outside taking pictures of anything right now...last I looked with the wind chill it was -35.

Scrappy Quilt Finish

I was organizing my sewing room (aka trying to find my copy of Simply Retro that I misplaced) and I found a bunch of strips for 25 patch blocks leftover from this quilt.  I decided to sew up the blocks to see if I had enough to make a baby quilt.  I only had to add in 4 squares of fabric to make the needed 20-25 patch blocks for the quilt front. 

 

Next came the backing and I may have a slight obsession with Me and My Sister Designs fabric when making quilts for baby girls.  I went through my scraps and found leftovers from several quilts which allowed me to 100% piece the backing.  There are fabrics from at least four different quilts including this one, this one, this one and this one. 

I'm even going to be able to use up scraps of batting that I have sitting around and leftover binding from another quilt.  It feels so good to use what I have to make a fun quilt that will either wait for a little girl to enter into out friend/family circle or it will be donated.

Scrappy Baby Quilt

I used up scraps to make a baby quilt as a just in case...or I may donate it...not sure yet. I did have to buy backing and binding fabric for this one. I still have some leftover 4 patches and the print so I may make a tag-e blanket to gift with the quilt.

 

Another finish

I got my new neice or nephew's quilt back a few weeks ago and attached the binding by machine before sewing it on by hand.  I love the peace and quiet of hand binding and it has been my dance night hand work. 

 

That is our 2 year old chocolate lab, Bella, photo bombing my quilt shoot.  She recently lost the priveledge of having full run of the backyard.  She likes green tomatoes and stole all the tomatoes out of my garden.  She is now chained to the clothes line pole.  

 

The quilt was quilted by my local longarm quilter with a slightly off-white thread an different size anchors.  It adds a ton to this quilt since the piecing is so plain jane with the panel.  

 

I love the backing.  I think I got the absolute last of it online via Etsy.  My local quilt shop had assured me that this was a new line and I would have no problem finding the backing fabric.  I guess new is relative.  I don't remember the exact size of the quilt, but it is really long.  I had a bunch of the backing fabric leftover and have cut it into squares to make a scrappy quilt with 4 patches (like this one).  I was able to get some other fabric from the line from my local quilt shop for the backing and binding.  Yay for using up scraps and for having a quick and easy baby quilt ready to rock and roll!

 

From an earlier post about this quilt, when it was just a flimsy, my brother and his wife live in Boston and were married on the beach so this quilt is perfect. 

My brother saw the quilt a few weeks ago when he was home for the 4th and I will be giving it to his wife at her baby shower this Sunday...where we will also find out if I'm getting a neice or a nephew :)  I saved some of the fabric with the rope on it to tie the quilt up....so excited!

Baby Quilt

I finished this baby quilt last Thursday and dropped it off to the quilter when I picked up my 2012-2013 Mystery Block of the Month quilt.  I am not normally a panel user, but this one was too cute to pass up, especially since this quilt is going to be for my new niece of nephew in the fall.  My brother and his wife live in Boston and were married on the beach...so it is quite fitting for them. 

 

 

 

Don't you just love the turtles?  Since the piecing on this one is so simple, I decided to have it quilted  with anchors.  I can't wait to show you the final quilt, it is going to be so stinkin' cute!

WIP Wednesday

I saw this fabric at my local quilt shop and fell in love with the panel and the backing fabric.  My brother and his wife are expecting their first baby in the fall and they were married at the beach and live in Bost.on.  I thought this fabric was perfect and scooped it right up in case they have a boy, if not, this quilt will wait for the next baby boy that comes into my family.

The fabric is Seaside Holiday by Benartex.  Thank God for Etsy because that is where I found the backing fabric.

More Butterflies and Babies

Butterflies and Babies

I can't believe that I blogged about this quilt just about a year ago as my first quilting blog post.   It seems only fitting that as I approachmy 1-year blogiversary that I am posting about a finish from the end of 2012.  I had to wait to blog as this was a gift for a baby boy and I was waiting on my Mom to send the quilt to its new home.  You see this brand new baby boy is the grandson of J who received the handprint quilt.  J wanted nothing more to be a Grandma and it was not easy for her daughter C to get pregnant...something I am all too familiar with.  So when she got pregnant I knew that I would be making a quilt for this baby. 

 

I used the Me and My Sister Designs Easy as 11 pattern, slightly modified so I didn't have to piece the quilt backing and Riley Blake's Pieces of Hope fabric.  I quilted with straight lines, 1/4 inch on either white side fo the colored stripes.

 



 

 

LEftover fabric from the stripes was used for a super scrappy binding (love!) and I peiced the back.  I love a good pieced backing.  The colors of the quilt are perfect for this very modern and super trendy family.

 

After he was born and I made the tag for his quilt, my Mom asked me if I had any fabric from J's quilt leftover and if I did, she wanted a piece of it on baby E's quilt.  I cut one of the butterfly's out and added it to the quilt back, right next to the tag with birth stats. 

Baby E got his quilt last week and his Mommy sent me a note thanking me for the little piece of her Mom on the quilt.  I hope E has butterflies in his life forever as a sign of his Grandma watching over him.
